PARTY LOYALTY VS GENDER EMPOWERMENT

Justice Minister Martha Karua is a member of Kenya Parliamentary Women Association that is in front line to uplift women into the Legislative Assembly. See http://www.awepa.org/awepa-news/kenyan-women-parliamentarians-association-pushes-for-mps-quota-in-the-kenya-national-assembly_en.html (On 7 August 2007, Kenyan Women Parliamentarians Association, KEWOPA, launched a campaign to push for a women MP quota in the Kenya National Assembly by marching through the streets of the capital, Nairobi, and surrounding areas. ) Yet her campaign against the Embakasi Constitutiency Parliamenty women aspirant among them Esther M. Passaris goes against the very spirit of the association. This highlight a fatal conflict between on the one hand party loyalty and gender empowerment on the other. In this particular case party loyalty override gender empowerment. Could it be said that it is a case of women being their own enemy in the match towards equality with men or exercise of the one’s own conscience?
